A designer may use a column grid to determine where certain kinds of text belong within a layout. A column grid can be flexible for designers while working with text. Text such as body copy may need wider columns to avoid problems like hyphenation. We would not want too narrow of columns with body copy because it causes hyphenation, leading to confusion. Confusion causes disinterest. When displaying captions, they should be placed in an adjacent column. This will allow the readers to understand the distinction between the primary body copy and the caption. However, designers must be careful of having a column too wide when working with body copy. It will lead to a long line of words, making it hard for readers to find the following line to read. By adjusting the type size, leading, and spacing, a designer can find the correct width for columns to read comfortably.
